When a digital business card is more useful than paper
Choose a format around what happens after an introduction, not just how the card looks.
Start with the next action
A business card has one practical job: help someone reconnect with you. Paper can work well for a quick note or a meeting without connectivity. A digital profile becomes useful when you want to share a portfolio, booking page, or several contact options without printing every address.
Separate the card from the information
A printed phone number stays printed even after your number changes. A card linked to a profile can keep pointing to the same address while the page behind it changes. That depends on keeping the destination available and under your control; a link to a deleted page will not repair itself.
Keep the handover human
Ask whether the other person would like your details before showing a card. Explain what will open and let them choose whether to save anything. The strongest introduction is still the conversation, not the technology.
Decide what you actually need
Before choosing a format, run through a typical meeting. If one name and a phone number are enough, keep it simple. If showing your work is important, a focused digital page can remove an extra search.
- Pick one primary action for your profile.
- Keep a readable contact option as a backup.
- Review the destination whenever your work or contact details change.
