A useful follow-up after a networking event

Turn an exchanged contact into a relevant conversation, without sending a generic pitch.

Make a note while it is fresh

After a conversation, record a brief reminder of where you met, what you discussed, and anything you offered to send. Keep it professional and minimal. A name without context quickly becomes hard to distinguish from the rest of an event's contacts.

Follow through on the actual conversation

If you promised an example, introduction, or useful resource, lead with that. Say where you met and why you are writing. Avoid attaching a large sales deck when the other person asked for one link. A small, relevant message makes it easier to respond.

Offer an easy next step

Use a question that can be answered briefly. For example: “You mentioned updating your restaurant photos. Would the short shoot checklist we discussed be useful?” Treat this as a conversation starter, not a template to send unchanged to everyone.

Respect a quiet inbox

Exchanging a card is not a reason to add someone to a mailing list or repeatedly contact them. Let people decide whether to continue. Review your own profile before sending the message so the links and role they see match the introduction.

  • Mention one real detail from your meeting.
  • Send what you promised.
  • Ask one clear question.
  • Respect a request not to be contacted.
